Why are smoke alarms important?

A smoke alarm is an essential safety device that provides early warning in the event of a fire. It is designed to detect smoke and sound an alarm, giving you and your loved ones valuable time to evacuate safely. Smoke alarms have proven to be life-saving devices, significantly reducing the risk of injuries and fatalities caused by fires.

Installing additional interconnected smoke alarms in bedrooms and common areas improves the likelihood that you will be alerted to a fire at the earliest possible time.

We are well-versed in the smoke alarm legislation outlined by the Queensland Government. Our installations strictly adhere to these requirements, ensuring your property meets the necessary safety standards. Smoke alarms act as vigilant guardians, monitoring your property around the clock. They are capable of detecting smoke particles in the air, even before the fire becomes fully visible or intense. Process we follow during smoke alarm installations

Assessment and Consultation

Our experts will assess your property and evaluate the specific requirements for smoke alarm installation and testing. Taking into account factors such as property layout, number of rooms, occupancy type, and Queensland Government regulations, we will provide recommendations on the type, quantity, and optimal placement of smoke alarms.

Smoke Alarm Installation

Our skilled technicians will install smoke alarms in appropriate locations within your property. Following manufacturer’s instructions and relevant Queensland Government regulations, we will mount the alarms securely on ceilings or walls at the correct height for optimal smoke detection.

Battery or Hardwired Alarms

The Queensland Government has strict rules on the layout of smoke detectors and whether battery or hardwired alarms can be used. For example, existing hardwired smoke alarms that need replacement, must be replaced with a hardwired photoelectric smoke alarm. Working with you and following Queensland Government regulations, We will determine the most suitable type of smoke alarms for the property. This may involve installing battery-operated smoke alarms or hardwired ones that are connected to the electrical system of the building.

Interconnected Smoke Alarms

The Queensland Government requires that smoke alarms within a house are interconnected. These alarms are linked together, so when one detects smoke, all the alarms in the system sound simultaneously. Interconnected alarms provide enhanced safety by ensuring that occupants receive early warning throughout the property. Our smoke alarm solutions meet these requirements.

Testing and Maintenance

Our thorough testing process ensures the proper functioning of the installed smoke alarms. Using smoke test aerosols or built-in test buttons, we simulate smoke detection and verify that each alarm sounds loudly and clearly. Any issues or malfunctions discovered during testing will be promptly addressed.

Battery Replacement

Some smoke alarms utilise a 9v battery as their primary source of power or for backup. When working on your smoke alarms we will check the condition of the batteries and replace them as needed. We may offer battery replacement services on a regular maintenance arrangement. Note: for all homes or units being sold or leased, including lease renewals, smoke alarms manufactured more than 10 years ago must be replaced with photoelectric smoke alarms with either a 10 year battery or hardwired.

Documentation and Compliance

We maintain detailed records of the smoke alarm installation and testing, including the location of each alarm, the type of alarm, and the date of installation and testing. This documentation ensures compliance with fire safety regulations and provides a historical record for future reference.

Recommendations and Upgrades

We may offer recommendations for additional smoke alarms or upgrades to the existing system. We can advise on the installation of specialised smoke alarms, which meet strict Queensland Government requirements and provide improved detection capabilities.

Compliance with Regulations

We will ensure that the smoke alarm installation and testing services comply with Queensland Government requirements. We stay updated on the latest regulations and standards to ensure that the installed smoke alarms meet required specifications.

FAQ’s

That depends on whether you have an existing hardwired alarm in your premises. If you do and you are looking to upgrade your alarm to meet strict Government regulations you must engage an electrician to upgrade the existing wired alarm. You cannot simply leave an old wired smoke alarm in place. Any alarm older than 10 years must be replaced, including both wired and battery powered units. On the other hand, if you are replacing and installing only battery powered alarms than you can install these yourself. For houses with existing alarms we recommend engaging an electrician to assess whether you need to install a hardwired alarm.

Not necessarily. If you have an existing hardwired alarm that must be replaced with a new hardwired alarm. However, if your property does not include hardwired alarms than you do not need to have the alarm hard wired. A hard wired alarm provides additional benefits in that in the event of battery failure the unit will continue to operate while powered.

Our professionals can provide you with a smoke alarm certificate of compliance at the completion of their fire alarm installation or smoke alarm check. Rental properties may require a certificate of compliance. Homeowners looking to sell, will need to declare as a condition of the sale that compliant smoke alarms are installed in the residence. Our team at Jabel Electrical Services can provide you with peace of mind when selling or renting your property that your smoke alarms are compliant with strict Queensland Government requirements.

Yes. From 2027, all houses in Queensland regardless whether they are rented or not will require photoelectric interconnected smoke alarms. These must be either a hardwired (eg. 240v) or non-removable 10 year battery powered type alarm. These requirements have applied to Landlords since 1 January 2022. New home builds have required the installation of wired interconnected alarms since 2017.

That depends on whether you have a new house build, a renovation or simply upgrading your existing alarm setup. We recommend wired alarms, however, we can also install all battery operated models or a combination of wired and battery alarms in certain circumstances to reduce cost. New home builds require each alarm to be hardwired and replacements of existing wired units must be with another wired unit.

Wired smoke alarms are superior to battery only models as they have a dual power source, meaning that if one source of power fails, the other will continue to provide surveillance. That being said, wired alarms require an electrician to install them, meaning they can come at an additional cost.

10 years. Smoke alarms must comply with strict Queensland Government regulations, which among other things, requires battery powered alarms to be powered by a 10 year battery.

  • On each storey
  • In each bedroom
  • In hallways that connect bedrooms and the rest of the dwelling
  • If there is no hallway, between the bedroom and other parts of the storey; and
  • If there are no bedrooms on a storey, at least one smoke alarm must be installed in the most likely path of travel to exit the dwelling.
